Overview

The creeping rhizome of Imperata cylindrica, a perennial grass very common on every continent (cogon grass, considered invasive in several countries).

Lifted in spring or in autumn, washed with care, its shallow rhizomes are cut into fine yellowish-white lengths with an airy pith, giving off a mild, subtly sweet savour, almost refreshing.

Traditional uses

The reference herb for cooling the Blood and preserving its cohesion, particularly where heat in the Blood shows as light bleeding (the light signs the tradition ties to heat in the Blood).

Also to free the fluids gently where heat has a share in them, and to engender the Liquids (Jin Ye) when heat dries.

Remarkably mild in its action, within reach of delicate constitutions.

Preparation and traditional-use quantity

  • Decoction: 15 to 30 g (high quantities are possible, the herb being very mild), simmer for 25 minutes
  • Infusion: 1 tablespoon per cup, water at a simmer, 10 minutes, a pleasant flavour even on its own
  • Extended use: a tradition of regular use for constitutions of settled Heat

Precautions

To be avoided in cases of deficient Yang with deep cold. Otherwise a herb approachable by most constitutions.
